U.S. FOREST SERVICE

SPI was selected to maintain server databases on IBM ’s AIX Platform

THE BUSINESS NEED
Database administration and support services

THE SPI SOLUTIONS

Install system updates, conversion of data, monitoring of database performance and provide technical support.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT

In this project SPI provided comprehensive database administration services on IBM’s AIX platform. The main services provided by SPI consultants were as follows:

  • Installed system updates, technical information bulletins and other Forest Service-released Oracle software products
  • Assisted application developers in the conversion/transition of data and applications from Oracle 6 to Oracle 7
  • Monitored database use and performance and also executed the tuning/optimization of the system
  • Mapped physical and logical structure of the database
  • Provided day-to-day technical support for Oracle systems
  • Performed Oracle database maintenance, back up, and recover
  • Managed user enrollment
  • Oracle system and applications troubleshooting
  • Performed written backup and recovery procedures
  • Maintained daily log on call/problems summary
  • Established and maintain an Intranet Oracle help page
  • Assisted developers in migrating application

U.S. GENERAL SERVICES & ADMINISTRATION ORGANIZATION

Identify and correct a data recovery problem with a key system.

THE BUSINESS NEED

Design and implementation of a comprehensive data recovery plan.

THE SPI SOLUTION

Identified and restored a corrupt file system and acquired additional storage space.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT

The client had an accounts receivable system running on a UNIX operating system. This system was running on an Intel 33 MHz PC with a line printer and a 1/2-inch mainframe style tape drive unit. There was no room to expand disk capacity. As a result, vital data was lost and could not be restored even by the original developers.

SPI quickly determined that the problem caused by a corrupt file system and restored it creating additional space and production resumed.

Adding additional disks via a new SCSI interface was also recommended and approved by the client.

MAJOR U.S. RAILROAD COMPANY

THE BUSINESS NEED

Database administration and support services

THE SPI SOLUTION

Data modeling, logical design, mapping to the physical model, physical design & implementation, backup recovery and disaster recovery.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT

SPI's database administrators were involved in the activities of the clients' DBA group which was responsible for all the data activities of the company related to existing and future Database Management System (DBMS). These activities included the following:

  • Data modeling and logical design.
  • Mapping to the physical model.
  • Physical design and implementation.
  • Back up and recovery.
  • Disaster recovery.
    • Database object maintenance.
    • Database tuning.
    • Database monitoring.

All these activities were supported by DB2 and DL/I on the Mainframe, Oracle and UDB on the Mid tier.

SPI participated in the development of standards for these environments which needed to be adhered to by all the database developers.

SPI was also assigned to support specific application development groups that in turn supported specific business functions. The data model was maintained using the Erwin software package.

MAJOR U.S. SEMI -CONDUCTOR MANUFACTURING COMPANY

SPI was selected to provide design, development and implementation of a comprehensive, automated data security systems.

THE BUSINESS NEED
  • Design analysis, concept development, programming services.
  • Documentation of preliminary specifications, design, and development.
  • Conversion of IBM Mainframe data, and Honeywell computer systems data
  • Convert PC Server data into Oracle database tables, indexes and procedures
THE SPI SOLUTION

Automated the process to run multiple times per month and imported all worldwide data (from European, Pacific Rim , Japanese, and North American offices into a centralized data warehouse on an Oracle Server at the corporate office) and performed redundant security and data integrity checks. SIC coding was also performed against this data to create functional and activity based hierarchies of the customers and prospects. Using OraWEB as the primary WEB server, views and snapshots were developed to access the data in the warehouse behind the internal security measures and then presented that data on the intranet.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT

During this project SPI provided design analysis, concept development and programming services. In addition, the documentation of preliminary specifications, design, and development were also provided by the SPI team. DBA services were provided when required during the life cycle of this project. Senior SPI consultants participated in the project scheduling and coordination of activities which included assisting in the development of presentations, multimedia tools, and papers to explain the product and goals of the project to marketing and management personnel.

SPI was actively involved in the design, development, troubleshooting, and implementation of a data warehouse which was developed to import and parse data from mainframe and server sources. The data contained information of sales, resale, and marketing activities of the client for the last seven years.

Management reporting and customer market planning involved converting IBM Mainframe data, Honeywell Computer Systems data, and other PC Server data into Oracle database tables, indexes and procedures. The SPI team automated the process to run multiple times per month to import all worldwide data (from European, Pacific Rim , Japanese, and North American Offices into a centralized data warehouse on an Oracle platform.

U.S. GENERAL SERVICES & ADMINISTRATION ORGANIZATION

Develop reporting methodology and process to aid financial services group.

THE BUSINESS NEED

Required series of reports and queries to assist the management in making financial decisions.

THE SPI SOLUTION

SQL queries were generated using SQL Report Writer and SQL Forms Processing.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT

This project involved assisting the Database Administrator in formulating a series of reports and queries to assist the management team in making financial decisions. A series of reports were generated using SQL Report Writer and SQL Forms Processing.
