This project was related to the development of distance learning, a knowledge management portal. This had created a collaborative software for Communities of Practice (CoPs). At the beginning of this assignment SPI started supporting an existing web based portal, Knowledge
Management Network (KMN), developed by some other vendor. This product was developed in a multitude of languages
(Perl, PHP, C, Java and others). There were few problems in the existing portal. It lacked standardization and quite a
few non-standard languages were used in the development of portal. This portal was developed and
implemented on multiple platforms.
Therefore, we decided to develop a new portal using PHP on Microsoft NT 4.0 platform. Microsoft SQL Server
was used as a database in the back-end and most of the source code was migrated from the existing portal
while developing a new knowledge management site.
The customer appreciated a new portal. This site was in full compliance with the DoD Web Administration Policy, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 508 standards, and the recent security requirements implemented after
the September 11 th tragedy.
